Consider that 400-600 million dollars are spent annually on laxatives in the United States. Every year 126,000 Americans are diagnosed as having colorectal cancer. Of this population, 44% will die as a result of the disease. At least two million Americans suffer from colitis, ileitis, diverticulitis and 100,000 Americans have a colostomy each year.

Colon Facts:
(you don't want to miss!)
  • Our colon (large intestine) is as long as we are tall.
  • The diameter of our colon is equal to that of our wrist.
  • For every foot of colon we can store approximately 5 - 10 lbs. of feces.
  • A healthy "bowel movement" will measure 12 - 18 inches long.
  • A healthy person will have 2 -3 bowel movements each day.
  • The ascending colon controls the aging process in the body.
  • The colon re-absorbs fluids 8 - 10 times every 30 minutes.
  • The colon has pressure points similar to the reflexology points on our hands and feet.
  • To the degree your colon is clean, is to the degree your bloodstream is clean.
  • One "colonic" (colon hydrotherapy) equals three days of fasting.
What is Colon Hydrotherapy?
By Billy Odor

Colon hydrotherapy has been written about and talked about since the ancient writings of the Dead Sea Scrolls. With so much talk and to do of course there has been some misinformation going around. With this article we will try to put some of this to rest. Colonics and Colon Hydrotherapy mean the same thing. Colon Hydrotherapy is like having an internal bath.
You have heard the words large intestine or bowel to describe this area of your body. Your colon is as long as you are tall. Wow! That's something for us to think about. On average we are 5 ft to 6 ft tall. That's a lot of surface area to keep clean. So many of us think it's this little thing in the back of us were we do."whatever". On average an adult's alimentary canal is approximately 32 feet long. Out of this your colon is approx. 5 to 6 ft. and your small intestine is about 23 feet long. Your colon can store 8 to 10 lbs of digestive waste for every foot. Your small intestine can store l to 2 lbs for every foot. Why, don't we add this up and see just how full we can be. You could have 45 lbs. in your colon and another 30 or so pounds in your small intestine. The food in your small intestine is what you have eaten in the last few days and is on it's way to your colon to be eliminated. Whether you have had a bowel movement in the last few days or not; your small intestine will just keep adding to the digestive waste already there.
Colon Hydrotherapy is not the little red bag you use to see in your grandmother's bathroom. Enemas were used as the catch all for the cure all back in the good old days. We saved our doctor visit for the really big things. Do you remember when your grandmother said, "When was the last time you had a bowel movement?" If your answer was something like, "I don't remember." Into the bathroom you went for an enema. What is the difference between an enema and a colonic? An enema bag only holds 2 quarts of water. The amount of water you use is limited to how far the water can travel up inside the colon. Most of us can only get a pint or so in at a time. You also have this sudden build up of pressure and you have to run to the bathroom. Most people use tap water for their enemas. When you have a colonic there are gages on the equipment telling us how much pressure there is and the temperature of the water. The water is filtered. You don't have to keep getting up to go use the bathroom. Colonics are sanitary and safer. Everything goes through the equipment. There is a view tube for observation. We see all kinds of pills, popcorn, green peas, yellow corn, etc.

How a colonic is performed:
Let us start off with describing how a colonic is performed when you have a session. You and your Colon Hydrotherapist work together for 30 to 45 minutes each session. Each colonic should last no less than 30 minutes. If longer than 45 minutes your electrolytes could be affected. It takes approximately 20 minutes for your colon to start releasing. Your therapist will use disposable tubing with each visit. The therapist will insert one tube, the speculum, through the anus up to the rectum (approx. 2 inches). The speculum has a place on it for two other tubes to connect: one for the clean water tube and another for the soiled tube that leads away form the body. Both of these tubes attach to the equipment. This is called a closed system. Depending on the equipment, the flow of water pressure going into the colon may vary from psi to 1psi. The pressure behind the water going into your colon through the sigmoid, up the descending colon, is what helps the water flow through and around the splenic flexure so congestion in the transverse colon may be relieved. By relieving this congestion we are now in a good position to clean the ascending and cecum areas of the colon. Depending on how much congestion is in your colon and your personal goals will determine how many colonics you may want.
The most common system used in this area is a closed system as mentioned above. During a 45 minutes session at psi a continuous flow of approximately 15 gallons will go through the equipment, out of that only about 2 gallons will make it's way in and out of your colon with you absorbing only about 2 quarts of water over that period of time. After your session, the therapist will drain water out of the tube and any water that might be left inside of your lower colon, the therapist will remove the speculum, then you will visit the restroom.
In the state of Florida a colon hydrotherapist must be a licensed massage therapist. Then we go through a separate training and state certification for colonics. In the state of Florida we are not allowed to use any implants. We can't add anything to the water. The colon hydrotherapist must use disposables with each visit. The water that flows through our equipment must be filtered. We have a filtering system attached to the equipment comprised of two individual particle filters for hot & cold water, and a separate filter to remove any chemicals. A UV lamp is also attached to the equipment used to sterilize the water. The equipment must be FDA approved.
Your ascending colon controls the aging process:
I have a secret for you. According to Dr. Norman Walker, author of "Become Younger" and "Colon Health", your ascending colon controls the aging process in your body. As usual we are always looking everywhere else for what has always been right under our noses. Have you ever wondered why Dr. Walker would say this? Well maybe the next paragraph will answer your question.
Let us begin our journey through the large intestinal track and try to understand the different functions of our colon. Your colon has two primary jobs. One is to absorb the fluids out of the colon and any nutritional value that maybe left in the digestive waste before it leaves your body. Your colon reabsorbs 8 to 10 times every 30 minutes. This is how your body hydrates itself. The second job is called peristalsis this is a wavelike muscular contraction of the large intestinal track which forces the feces along your colon wall as the fecal matter moves out of your body. You call this a bowel movement. We should have a bowel movement 2 to 3 times each day. The colon is considered a smooth muscle and feels like the inside of your cheeks. When our diet is heavy in grains, cheese and then we don't drink our daily requirement of water it's no doubt that our peristalsis can't perform as designed. As time goes by we start to notice we are having less and less bowel movements, we also notice our waistline is growing, and we have this constant full feeling. This would be an indication of constipation. Do you remember at the start of this we talked about how your colon absorbs 8 to 10 times every 30 minutes? Well, if your colon is sluggish (very slow peristalsis) and your colon is still doing its other job, absorbing like clockwork, you are going to end up with hard feces. We call this constipation.
I'm always amazed when someone tells me they are fasting and not doing enemas or colonics. We seem to forget about all the medications, and the artificial sweeteners, additives, preservatives, pesticides, flavor enhancers, etc, in our foods. The more time digestive waste spends in the colon, the greater your chances are of reabsorbing these toxins. Wouldn't you want to move this out of your body as soon as possible? To the degree your colon is clean, is to the degree your blood stream is clean. Just like clockwork, no matter how sluggish your colon may be, it's right there doing its other job reabsorbing while dehydrating your digestive waste. Pulling the waste back into your body's system through the blood stream. Doing a liver, gall bladder, kidney flush, etc., is really hard on the body. One colonic is equivalent to three days of fasting. Wouldn't this be a lot easier on you? Remember, what goes in MUST come out in a timely fashion, two-three times everyday!
Water is very important. "Clean filtered water." Your body requires oz. of water per pound of body weight per day. WATER IS NOT AN OPTION. Water is a MUST!
Some of the benefits you could receive from having colonics: your waistline seems to be getting smaller, less bloating, fewer headaches, you might sleep better therefore you could have more energy.

"The total mucosal surface area of the adult human GI tract is up to 300 square meters making it the largest body area interacting with the environment....(This) makes the gastrointestinal tract the largest lymphoid or immune organ in the human body. It has been estimated that there are approximately 10 10 (power of 10) immunoglobulin producing cells per meter of small bowel- accounting for approximately 80% of all immunoglobulin producing cells in the body."
