The Green Detox Program

By Marzia Prince

Say goodbye to holiday junk food and hello to a healthier new you. It’s time to get real. By real, I mean eating real whole foods to nourish the body. This is the time of the year when people run out to get the latest fad cleanse or crash diet thinking this is a healthy detox. When they fail, they blame the cleanse or diet only to start back eating processed foods again. It a bad vicious cycle that many of us are guilty of.

After years of yo-yo dieting, cleanse crashing, and trial and error, I have come up with a well-balanced cleanse that is gentle on the system.

A food cleanse or detox is the process of eliminating processed junk foods, alcohol, meat, dairy, and caffeine out of your system to cleanse the body of impurities by faster cell regeneration, boost metabolism, and overall helps your systems to run more efficiently so you can look and feel good. But, with any cleanse, there are side effects of detoxing.

We all know when we go from binging on processed foods to portion sized real whole foods our body goes through withdrawals. We freak out with mood swings, get cranky, and we don’t feel like ourselves. Much like a drug addict, your food stash has been taken away. Watch out! Now all you can think about is food. When you eliminate or cut back on certain foods, your body eliminates toxins. Your body will try to expel toxins in any way it can: from your liver, via bowel movements, and through your skin’s pores.

Here are some common detox symptoms:

  • Skin breakouts

  • Bloating, stomach pains

  • Headaches

  • Food cravings

  • Trouble sleeping,nightmares

  • Diarrhea and constipation

  • Fatigue, drowsiness,low energy levels

  • Irritability

  • Congestion or Mucus that feels like a cold

The answer is quite simple, YES! If you have been eating processed garbage for some time now or coming off a holiday season (from Thanksgiving to New Year’s) then yes, you need to detox. You will be surprised to learn that some of the chemicals and preservatives get stuck in your body and can be toxic over time. The general idea of a detox is to rid impurities and eat a healthier lifestyle on a regular basis. If you want to burn fat off your body and build lean muscle, then a detox is in order for you.

Going from your New Year’s binge to detoxing the next day on a hangover of alcohol and junk food, is a recipe for failure. I suggest that you eat clean real whole foods for 3 weeks before you do a cleanse.

Most detox programs tell you to cut out all your bad habits cold turkey and shift to the detox diet. I have to disagree with that. This messes with your metabolism. It takes time for your metabolism to catch up with the clean eating and the shift in your metabolism. What I like to tell my clients is to do it slow. You need a clean eating transition period before you do any detox. When you do things slowly, it becomes easier to eliminate bad food and easier to adapt to the new food. The detox program won’t be as hard.

Precursor to the Green Detox:

Here are some rules to prep you for your green detox program. The whole program is 30 days. 3 weeks clean eating and 1 week detox. In your 3 week prep to your detox, please follow the tips below to be more successful for your 1 week detox.

1. For 21 days (3 weeks) start eliminating processed and refined foods for your diet.

2. Stop drinking alcohol and replace with sparkling water.

3. Stop drinking coffee and replace with green tea.

4. Stop drinking soda and replace with sparkling water.

5. No sugar, fake sugars, breads, anything refined, wheat, or gluten. You will replace with whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, or oatmeal.

6. Try to go organic as you can.

7. Get a calendar so that you can chart your progress.

8. Be patient. Take it day by day. You will have good days and you will have bad days. Stay strong. It will be worth it in the end.

3 Week Detox Prep Nutrition:

I train all types of clients with different types of nutritional needs from carnivores, vegetarians, pescatarians, gluten-free, and vegans. I will have 2 basic nutrition formats that you can choose from to prep for the detox. I will have a carnivore prep and a vegan prep. Note: All my nutrition programs are gluten-free. Example: If you are a pescatarian, do the vegan prep and add fish to where you need it. This is what your daily menu should look like for your 3 weeks prep.

Carnivore Prep: Please take digestive enzymes to break down animal meat.

3-4 egg white omelet (can eat 1 yolk) with 1 cups of your favorite fresh fruit

Digestive enzymes to break down animal protein

1 apple

15 almonds

3 oz. grilled chicken on salad loaded with veggies (olive oil vinegar for dressing)

1 cup quinoa

Digestive enzymes for animal meat

½ bell pepper sliced, 10 cherry tomatoes, ½ cucumber

½ cup hummus

3 oz. chicken, fish, or beef

1 sweet potao

2 cups fresh, steamed, or juiced veggies

Digestive enzymes for animal meat

Vegan Prep:

1 cup cooked gluten-free oatmeal with 1/2 cup blueberries and 1 scoop protein powder

1 fresh fruit smoothie with protein powder added

4 oz. beans and 1 cup whole grain or brown rice mixed together with 1 large salad on side

½ cup of hummus with 2 cups raw veggies

1 vegan meat substitute like tofu, “chicken”, or black bean patty

2 cups steamed or raw of your favorite veggies

½ sweet potato baked

Do the prep for 3 weeks. After the 3 weeks, you have graduated to the 1 week Green Detox.

1 Week Green Detox Program:

Do the Green Detox for 1 week. Upon rising drink 2 cups of room temp water with a squeeze of lemon to cleanse liver. Also, while going through a cleanse, I use a raw vegan protein powder like Sun Warrior (plant protein) to help clean your system. It does not have a lot of chemicals and bad ingredients like some protein powders on the market. Sun Warrior has great detoxing products, especially to use while on a cleanse.

Note: There is no caffeine, alcohol, dairy, meat, fake meats (vegan), soy, refined or processed foods for the 1 week Green detox!

Meal 1: My Lean Green Juice: 1/2 cucumber, 2 stalks asparagus, 2 cups romaine lettuce, 1 leaf of Kale, 1 pear or apple, 1 stalk celery, 1 inch of ginger root, and a handful of parsley

Meal 2: Fruit Smoothie: 1 cup coconut water, 1 cup frozen raspberries, 1 cup fresh mixed berries, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1 scoop plant protein powder like Sun Warrior Raw Vegan Vanilla protein powder, ½ tablespoon of Sun Warrior Ormus Green, 1 capful of Sun Warrior liquid light, and ½ teaspoon of Sun Warrior’s immune shield.

Meal 3: Large Salad with lots of veggies (I eat a HUGE salad with ginger lime dressing). The salad is about 4-6 cups of green. You can put anything you want in it as far as veggies go. I put spring mix lettuce, spinach, carrots, cucumbers, sprouts, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cilantro, black olives, and chick peas

Meal 4: 2 cups fresh veggies with 1/4 cup of hummus OR 1/4 of an avocado (I like baby tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, broccoli, and cauliflower)

Meal 5: My Lean Green juice again

Meal 6: Large salad with olive oil/vinegar dressing and on the side 1 scoop Sun Warrior protein powder with water.

I will drink Dandelion root tea and Cranberry root tea throughout the day to cleanse my liver and get off the water weight (inflammation) and filtered water or coconut water to hydrate and replenish electrolytes.

Benefits of a Cleansing Detox

  • Clearer sinuses

  • Weight loss

  • Build lean muscle

  • Clearer skin

  • More energy

  • Regular bowel movements

  • Mental Clarity

  • Emotional stability / eliminated depression

Caution: Do not detox on a regular basis like it is a diet or way of life. One to two good detoxes a year is fine with some time in between them. Your body needs time to recover form eliminating toxins.

After you have completed the 30 day detox you should continue to eat a healthy whole food balanced nutrition similar to the 3 week prep. If incorporating any bad foods after the detox, keep it to a minimum.

Happy detoxing!
